Description

American Precision Arms' New and Improved Self-Timing Brake

In 2019 American Precision Arms released Generation 3 Little Bastard. APA's muzzle brakes make for excellent rifle additions. However, past APA muzzle brakes did have room for improvement.

In a 2015 muzzle brake test performed by Cal Zant, the author and product tester, at Precision Rifle Blog found that APA brakes do a great job at reducing recoil. However, he thought these brakes fell short on helping the shooter stay on target.

Fine-Tuning Muzzle Flip With Eight Tunable Top Ports

The Gen 3 Little Bastard muzzle brake solves APA's past issues with muzzle flip, also known as muzzle rise. To help shooters decrease muzzle rise, it has eight tunable top ports. Each port has a threaded plug, which allows the shooter to adjust the muzzle brake's gas release to the gun's recoil profile.

The ports toward the nut of the muzzle brake adjust more pressure, while the ports towards the end of the brake adjust less pressure. These strategically placed ports allow the shooter to fine-tune the muzzle brake for their specific rifle.

In essence, these directional gas ports allow the shooter to adjust the muzzle brake, so recoil doesn't impact the sight picture. If, for instance, after a shot, the sight picture moves to the right, a shooter can remove plugs on the left of the brake.

The eight ports on the muzzle allow for 256 possible combinations, which makes fine-tuning the sight picture to the recoil profile of the gun more precise than ever before. Once sighted in, the shooter can Threadtite the screws in place and shoot to their heart's content.

Why an Adjustable Muzzle Helps Precision Shooters

With an adjustable muzzle, the shooter can stay on target in their reticle, allowing them to see their impacts. When a shooter can't see their target impacts, they don't know if they are low or high, decreasing their ability to adjust for tighter groupings.

American Precision Arms' Lock Nut Design

The APA Gen II muzzle also has a lock nut design allowing owners to skip a trip to their local gunsmith and keep their muzzle at the same length. However, this lock nut tended to rotate while tightening, which meant it took several tries before it would line up correctly. The Generation 3 Little Bastard has solved the over-rotation issue, so the muzzle shouldn't need adjusting after tightened.

Recoil and the Additional Row of Ports

The fourth row of ports comprises the third difference between this muzzle and other American Precision Arms muzzle brakes. This fourth row helps to reduce recoil even further than the second-gen muzzle did.

Took my 308 out yesterday with this puppy installed and it performed like a champ. I ended up pulling the back left and the back two right set screws to eliminated muzzle jump. Recoil was much less also.
